Bree Jonson (b. 1991, Philippines) received her degree in Industrial Engineering at Ateneo de Davao University in 2012. She is interested in the dynamics of the natural world and the insights this provides into human nature. Through allegory and symbolism, in the beauty and horror of her painted dogs, cats, rabbits and wolves; and of her increasingly unusual subjects like sea urchins and anemones act as visual lines of inquiry into the complex and darker side of the human psyche. She is now working on two ongoing projects such as studying flora and fauna species (both extinct and endangered) that are endemic to particular regions, to parallelize this with the human experience; and ‘In A Room of One’s Own’ which aims to study how women (and people who identify as women) are treated and seen in different cultures. Several outcomes of this project is to capture these various experiences in paintings / sculptures / installations of flora and fauna, and video work and photography that shows how women symbolically arrange their own rooms. Bree Jonson lives and works in Metro Manila, Philippines.
